Crisis Group Role:

Arturo Matute is Crisis Group’s analyst based in Guatemala City since April 2015. He researches and produces reports on conflict, political, governance and human rights issues related to Guatemala and the Central American region with an emphasis on human trafficking - migration, urban organised crime and impunity issues.

Professional Background:

Mr. Matute has 15 years of experience as a practitioner and analyst on development, governance, security and violence prevention in Guatemala as well as the Central American region. He has worked for UNDP, RTI, USAID, ILO and GIZ among other international organizations as a project manager, strategic advisor and social researcher.

Mr. Matute holds a master’s degree in anthropology and development from the London School of Economics, a postgraduate diploma in research of local economic development from FLACSO - Costa Rica, and is originally a business administrator from Universidad Nacional Andrés Bello in Santiago de Chile.

Since 2004 Mr. Matute has taught in the social sciences faculty at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala where he also headed the master’s degree program in development studies during the 2010 – 2014 period.
